Mission accomplished: Maggie gets her $5 rabies shot, along with 400!! of her canine cousins

21 03 2009

I can’t say it was the easiest or quickest $13 I’ve saved, but I still think it was worthwhile to take our dog, Maggie, to the rabies clinic today for her $5 rabies booster vaccination. As I wrote yesterday, her last booster three years ago cost $17.90 at the vet’s office.

We arrived at the clinic at about 11:15 and could not believe our eyes. There was an endless parade of pooches of all shapes, sizes and colors, along with a few petrified felines in crates. While my husband and daughter did the paperwork and paid, I got in line with Maggie. It took us a little more than an hour to get to the front of the line.

But we talked to a lot of nice folks and enjoyed — for the most part — watching all the dogs and their antics. I say for the most part because there was one Pomeranian who would not stop barking. And when the church bells began playing a 5-minute song at noon, there was no stopping that dog.

If you’re one of my local readers, be sure to click here for the schedule of clinics being held this spring in Wake County, North Carolina. There are nine more scheduled in April. If you live elsewhere, call or check the websites of your local shelters, humane societies and county governments.

One final note: While we were standing in line, my husband and daughter tried to talk me into using the $13 we saved on a fast-food lunch. Tempting….but we did not.
